Built by the Romulan Star Empire in order to beef up its front battle lines, the Romulan Navy Kerchan Class type of ships were first developed in the year 2380, when the Romulan Empire was at odds with the Federation. The Romulans built on the success of the Norexan class as diplomatic and scientific vessels. The D'dedirex Class was updated into what came to be known as the Romulan Navy Kerchan Class vessels. These mighty battleships were meant for serious business.

They were slated to be most fearsome ships in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. The Romulan Navy Kerchan Class ships were also built to counter the Klingon Empire's premier battleships, the Negh'Var Class. When it comes to Federation vessels, te Excalibur class may be considered the equivalent of the Romulan Navy Kerchan Class ships.

It was during the year 2368 that the Romulan Navy Kerchan Class were first commissioned. The pioneering vessel from this class was called the IRW Kerchan. It was finished in 2372. This ship was fine-tuned during the next three years. Small problems and other bugs were fixed. The Romulan Navy Kerchan Class ships were then produced beginning 2376.

These ships are huge. They are 1500 meters long, 879 meters wide, and 447m high. One ship can have 100 decks.
