The Ascension class ship was initially designed to be the flagship of the Federation but the whole design had been kept aside to progress to other ship designs because it is too big and it requires huge power and even bigger costs to build and operate. It was not until the 2380 when the Dominion War had taken its toll on the Federation that they decided to take a second look at the Ascension class. They began redesigning the ship in order to make ends meet without sacrificing anything useful from the original design.
It was January 23, 2382 when the ships keel of the hull was placed in the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yard for construction. It took two years to finish 75% of the hull and in May 15, 2384 it left the dock to be tested. The warp nacelles and the EPS grids were seen to have problems in functioning so the ship had to be in the dry dock for another six months for modification. In March 30, 2385 the Ascension was tested again and this tme, it passed the offensive and defensive weapon testing. It was finally commissioned on February 23, 2387 and was given the registry number NX-89347.
Being a very huge ship, the Ascension class has 44 decks and a shuttle bay that stored shuttles and fighters on standby for easy deployment. It also has a separate transporter system that is situated on several areas of the ship excluding the bridge for security reasons. Deck 1 holds the bridge, the captain’s ready room, a briefing room, the observation lounge, and the aft bridge airlock. The upper rooms were dedicated to the officers and the important areas of the ship such as the security office and strategic offices. Transporters and escape pods are scattered in strategic locations.
