The Starship USS Defiant NX-74205 was one of the three starships of the same prototype owned by the Federation that was in service under the Starfleet in the late 24th century. It was an escort type of ship.
This ship was developed in 2366 as part of the preparation for the threats coming from the Borg. Although it is qualified as an escort vehicle only, the design of the ship is more intended to be that of a warship with the capacity to fight and defeat the Borg.
It was designed to accommodate minimal equipment and could not hold families. The development ended and the ship was launched in 2370 on stardate 47538.5 on the Antares Ship Yards. The first trial did not go well as the ship nearly fell apart with too much power so the project was abandoned.
Later that year, the USS Odyssey was destroyed so Commander Benjamin Sisko requested for the Defient to be pulled out of storage. This was when the ship got its cloaking device.
The Defiant’s first contacts were Karemma the Founders, and the Meridian in 2371. Being a small escort ship, the Defiant does not have permamnent crew or assignment at Deep Space 9. It was used as a support vessel manned by station personnel that vary per mission. In 2371 to 2375, it was commended by Captain Benjamin Sisko with Colonel Kira Nerys as Executive and Tactical Officer along with Lieutenant Commander Work in 2372 to 2375.
