A gul in the Cardassian Guard, Skrain G. Dukat is famous for his leadership skills. He has been known to use diplomacy when he was assigned in key positions, but he is also notorious for being treacherous at times.
Dukat's military career started off when he enlisted in the Cardassian Guard. He felt that the fate of his people depended on the strength of Cardassia's military forces. So he signed up, hoping to lead Cardassia to a better future.
In 2346, Legate Danig Kell made Dakut the eighth prefect of Bajor (and he would be the last). As prefect, Dakut was tasked to supervise the slave and mining operations of the planet. His headquarters was set up in Terok Nor, a command post in orbit of Bajor. Thus, Dakut was also officially named Commander of Terok Nor in the Occupation of Bajor. At that time, Terok Nor served as a mining station. It was where uridium was processed and refined, ultimately for Cardassia's usage.
At the beginning of his tenure, Dukat decided to take it gentle and instituted measures to reduce labor camp quotas, end child labor and boost food and medical care rations. Exactly a month after he became prefect, however, Resistance agents had killed 200 Cardassian workers by destroying an orbital drydock.
Dakut retaliated and ordered the execution of 200 suspected members of the Resistance. Because of this and the other atrocities that he committed after, Dakut became one of the most despised villains in Bajoran history. In fact, there have been at least five assassination attempts on Dakut!
When the Cardassian Union withdrew from the Bajor sector in 2369, Dakut left Terok Nor and went on to become one of the most high-profile names in the military.
Dakut later negotiated for Cardassia's entry in the Dominion and ended up as ruler of the Cardassian Union.
