What do the captain, chief engineer and science officer of Enterprise NX-01 have in common? They not only counted on each other professionally but also bonded personally. T’Pol and Captain Jonathan Archer were close friends; the Captain and Commander Charles Tucker III, known as Trip, were best buddies; and T’Pol and Trip had a romantic relationship.

For T’Pol and Trip, it was not an instant connection. Trip was initially suspicious of T’Pol, believing she was a spy for the Vulcans. But he began falling for her during the neuropressure sessions administered by T’Pol. They grew closer by the end of the Xindi mission and Trip accompanied T’Pol on a visit to her home. While at Vulcan, however, T’Pol was forced to marry Koss, her original betrothed, so her mother wouldn’t lose her career.

T’Pol and Koss eventually got divorced but it took a while for T’Pol and Trip to rekindle their romance (Trip even transferred to Columbia NX-02 for some time). Because of the intimate relationship they once shared, the two realized they also shared a physic bond. And they would later learn that they had a daughter, created with their stolen DNA. The procedure turned out to be flawed and they lost their child soon after.

T’Pol and Archer also did not hit it off at first. Archer felt T’Pol was cold, humorless and cynical, while T’Pol doubted the Captain’s leadership style. Yet the two learned to move past their differences as the mission progressed and came to respect and trust one another, especially after incidents involving a Vulcan security agent and a Vulcan surveillance station. At that point, they were comfortable sharing stories and even meals in the Captain’s mess.

Archer and Trip had a similar but stronger bond. Besides dining together, they knew each other well and were mutually supportive. From the time they first met during the NX Project to the intense survival training they endured in the Australian outback, the two always managed to push through and survive, coming to each other’s rescue on multiple occasions.
