The most successful and famous sci-fi television and movie franchise ever produced in the history of Hollywood, Star Trek remains to be all the rage with the fanatical devotion of its avid audience, more popularly known as "Trekkies." Over the span of 40 years since its inception, Star Trek has been nominated for a whopping of 58 Emmys including an award for Outstanding Drama Series. Eleven movies have been made out of the television program, five of the best are outlined below.
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
One of the best films ever created not only in the realm of science fiction but in general movies as well. This flick, which was released in 1991, is packed with smart and suspenseful plots that will keep you glued to the edge of your seat. The story basically revolves around the attempt of the Enterprise and Excelsior crews to fight the plot that will prevent a peace treaty between the Federation and the Klingon Empire.
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
An earlier film produced in 1982, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is another installment of this sci-fi flick that belongs to any top 5 list. Ricardo Montalban was especially memorable in his performance as Khan who is Captain Kirk's worthiest adversary.
Star Trek: First Contact
Another hit 1990s Star Trek film is the First Contact, wherein Captain Picard and his crew fight with Borg so that the Earth would not have its first contact with the alien life. Not only is Borg the most convincing and interesting villain in the movie series, the plot is also packed with action and suspense all throughout its duration. If you love action, this should belong to your list of must-have DVDs.
Star Trek (2009)
The latest film of Star Trek was released in 2009. It's the eleventh movie based on the sci-fi television/movie series but the cast is entirely new with Chris Pine as the new James T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock. The original captain, William Shatner wasn't too happy about the reboot that didn't include him. But despite some controversies, this Star Trek film pulled it off with its cutting edge technology and superb portrayal from the cast.
Star Trek: Generations
Star Trek: Generations produced in 1994 was more of a transition film that moved from the original cast to the less old ones. The storyline is about how Captain Picard stops a madman who's out to destroy the planet to get into the space matrix. He does this with the help of Captain Kirk, who was supposedly dead in the story.
