The Star Trek USS Enterprise NCC1701D the famous 24th century starship that is included in the Star Trek Universe. The ship was launched in October 4, 2363 and was first seen on the Encounter at Farpoint episode of the Star Trek television series. Its defense system includes the deflector shields which protect the ship from attacks.
The Enterprise D which is the common name for the Star Trek USS Enterprise NCC1701D was seen on several episodes of the television series. It was also used in the pilot episode of the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine the episode entitled “Emissary”. It was also used in the finale of the series Star Trek: Enterprise of the episode entitled “These and the Voyages”. And its last appearance was on the Star Trek Generations because of the warp core breach which resulted to the ship losing its stardrive section. On this scene the ship’s saucer section crash landed on Veridian III surface.
Although in one of the Star Trek’s alternate future as seen on the series finale of the episode “All Good Things…” the ship Enterprise-D was seen intact if the year 2395. But in this alternate future the ship is decommissioned from the Starfleet Enterprise and becomes a personal flagship of Admiral William Riker.
The ship has undergone a lot of major refits. There were new weapons added and a third warp nacelle. There was also the new cloaking device that is not present on the original ship.
The design of the ship was from Andrew Probert. He only assisted in the updating of the original Star Trek Enterprise when he accidentally created the Enterprise-D. He was assigned to do the designing of the bridge but he always does some “what if” sketches on his wall just for his own amusement. But when the story editor David Gerrold saw his sketch he then showed it to the creator Gene Roddenberry who immediately approved the sketch and does started the creation of the Enterprise-D known today.
A team from the Industrial Light and Magic which was supervised by Ease Owyeung build the first two miniatures of the new Enterprise design for the episode “Encounter at Farpoint”. The same models where used all throughout the first two seasons of the Star Trek: The Next Generation.
This original 6 foot saucer was auctioned in New York in October 2006 and it was sold for a surprising $576,000 it was the most expensive item sold in the auction. There are still two other miniature Enterprise-D model of two foot and four foot sizes respectively.
Comparing it against the original Enterprise the Enterprise-D proportions is quite different but still contains a few similarities like the dual warp nacelles and the saucer section appearance. Some big toy makers like Playmates and Art Asylum created replica of the ship.
