The USS Enterprise is the fifth Federation starship to bear the name Enterprise. The USS Enterprise served as the Federation flagship during the course of its career. In 2371, it was destroyed during the Battle of Veridian III.
The USS Enterprise D has had many encounters with asteroid fields. An asteroid field or asteroid belt is a bunch of asteroids that usually orbit aound a star in approximately a torroidal shape. The size of the asteroids in such belts vary wildly.
They can be as tiny as a grain to many kilometers wide. In addition to asteroids, asteroid fields have space debris, which is most likely what's left over from a planet's destruction.
In the TV series Star Trek, asteroid belts were quantified by their the Schiller Rating sometime during the late 23rd century. In the year 2266, the USS Enterprise chased an unregistered J class cargo vessel into an asteroid belt with a Schiller Rating of 3.5. First Officer Spock immediately informed his Captain James T. Kirk of the asteroid belt's Schiller rating.
Captain Kirk ordered the Enterprise to press on into the asteroid belt to chase the freighter.
